Install Day 5

Continued tweaking Lotem and 43wide.

Thursday, March 6, 2008

Install Day 3 and 4

Connect Lotem, 43wide, and Epson.

Difficulties: add renderstation on domain, but log in as local admin, adjustments on 43wide, PDF to Epson.

Install Day2

Added Domains.
Created Doman user... Prinergy.User.
Set up users.
Installed first client.

To do: output plate with ellipse dot.
clean up harmony curves.

Tomorrow: Lotem, proofers.

Install Day 1

Day 1 is installing the hardware.
The Servers did not come pre-installed with the Server names as requested, so Prinergy had to be re-installed... twice.
We also had to run a (network) line... this took some time.

Tomorrow's plan is to get it on the domain, RSS setup, 'transfer' all curves, connect all printers, and Lotem

Versioning

We did not get licensing for this.

e r s and Keg

The Keg was pretty good to. It's a steakhouse. Most meals start around $20. It's about a 20 minute walk from the hotel (5 min up Loughsheed, then 10-15 down Willingdon.

Also, Earls sign is either missing letters, or just plain missing. It has one of those "eternal flames" out front.

There is also a White Spot, Boston Pizza, and Church's Chicken right in front of the hotel, or up a block that are more family friendly.

Continental Breakfast

Continental Breakfast is included with our room rate. Please ask about the vouchers when you check in.

Jerry - please verify your room rate when you check in. It should be the Kodak rate. I've asked to change it twice now.

I've authorized that Room and Tax for your rooms but put on my card, so you only have to worry about incidentals.

Safari

When checking your email etc on the Kodak Macs, I'd recommend using Safari, and using turning on Private Browsing (under the Safari Menu). That way you don't leave a history, cache, credentials on the Kodak machines.

Cactus Club

I don't know what all the hype is about this place.
It's right out in front of the hotel.
The food is a little exotic/upscale? (not really my style).
Features will run you $12 or $25.

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

It hit 50º today.

Just thought I'd mention that.

Ticketing

To get your plane tickets...

In Louisville - go up to the counter. give them your passport and confirmation. they'll pull it up and check your bag and give you your boarding passes. I've never had to wait more than a couple people deep in line to get to the counter.

In Chicago - stand in line. You'll be in line to use a kiosk. Just follow the wizard on the Kiosk. The first thing it asks you to do is verify yourself. You'll put your passport picture down on a little scanner next to the kiosk. When it asks if you are checking any bags, that's when an attendant will come over and help you finish. Pretty easy stuff.

Note, you don't have to do this in each airport, if you have connections, just the originating one.

Goodie Day

Wednesdays at 3PM is Goody Day.
They plop a lot of treats down in the cafeteria for everyone to grab at and mingle over.
(You'll actually want to go a few minutes early if you want something good.)

OWA

Just a reminder that you can check your email while here.
There is internet capability on the classroom workstations.
https://mail.johnsongroup.com

You can send me an email if you have questions, or whatever.

Response Center

Went and got a tour of the Response Center over lunch today.
Pretty cool to put faces with names.
Remind me when you are here, and I'll see what I can do to set you up with one.

Bill - I'm not sure what there is in Rochester to explore, but I might be able to find someone there.

Cafeteria

They really don't have any problem taking american money. They might give you CND back, but they've just been doing $1 for $1.

Walking

Walked back to hotel yesterday. It's straight down Gilmore. Took less than 30 minutes.

Milestones

for supper.
less than 5 minutes walk up Lougheed.
It's just "okay".
Average meals start around $16.

EA

On the other "corner" of Gilmore and Kincaid, is EA - Electronic Arts. The video game maker. Huge complex.

Weather.

45º.

Just wanted to mention that.

Preps Ganging

You may have to ask to see this.
It is basically what Preps 6 will basically look like.
Pretty nice.
Drag -n drop functionality

Next Weeks Class

Is taught by the same instructor, Richard Huitink.
There are 8 people scheduled to be in that class.

I don't know about the March 24th class.

Class Size

My class has only 3 Kodak Customers, and 2 Kodak Application Specialists in it.

The workstations are white iMacs.

Color Mapping

Our shop's prefences will be to use PANTONE Color Bridge library. (CMYK, PC)

Earls

Went to Earls last night for dinner.
Very good.
About a 5 minute walk down Loughsheed.
Entrees start at about $12.

Support Center

The building the training is in (Kincaid) is basically on one corner of Kincaid and Gilmore. There is another Kodak building on the corner of Gilmore and Kincaid (Gilmore). This is where the Support Center is located that we call into. I may try to sneak in later. ;-)

Shuttle

The shuttle leaves the hotel every morning at 8:15.

One guy walked today. Took him about 25 minutes. I might try that later.

Begin Day 2

a couple quick notes...
They supply you with Paper Pad/Pen/Notebook, so you don't have to worry about bringing those things.

Monday, February 18, 2008

Day 1

The shuttle bus to Kincaid is about 10 minutes.

You do stop at another hotel on the way.

I'd recommend not eating breakfast at the hotel. Go a little early to Kodak and eat in the cafeteria. MUCH more reasonable.

There are phones available at Kodak for phoning home and work. Cheaper than the hotel and roaming charges.

They are used to people leaving early (11-11:30) on Friday to head home. Won't miss much, not a big deal.

Day 1 & 2 is on Pages.
Day 3 on Preps.
Day 4 on Automation and Trapping.
Day 5 on System.

The SkyTrain is the public transportation system. Really easy to get downtown, etc. $2.50, honor system.

A couple of things you should know for "theory"...
Both plants will work off a tertiary server (JP - WIN2K3, CP - OS X).
We will be renaming our Servers (see previous posts).
Do not plan on us getting Insite, Link, Prepare.
JP will have a Secondary Server/Renderstation/EPM.
We will look into ExtremeZ-IP.
Every user will have their own login.

(We need to rename boa Jobs to BOAJobs).

JP will have Rule Bases Automation (RBA).

I need to talk to Craig about the Domain.

For Job Finder Management, I think we may Group by Archived / Production, then subgroups of job number.

We got out about 3PM today. The rest of the week will be longer.

Travel2

My flight got into yvr ok. But my luggage was not there. It was on the next flight in 11:30 PM local, 2 hrs away. They would deliver it to my hotel at 10 the next morning. I needed a different set of clothes for the next day, so I waited for it.

There are no shuttle buses to Burnaby.
You'll have to take a taxi. It's about $40. They do take credit card.
It's also possible to take public transportation, but not at the time I was in, so I didn't investigate further.

The hotel is fine.

Make sure to ask about the shuttle to the Kodak training center.

Evidently, breakfast is not included in the room rate. There is a restaurant. Most bfasts start at around $10.

BTW, there are Currency Exchanges in both airports. I think they charge a $3.50 fee.

Travel Day

I stayed the night in Chicago, so that I didn't need to worry about traveling in the ice storm.
Got to the airport at 7:50 AM for a 9:45 flight.
Took about 20 minutes to check bag and get boarding pass.
I decided to go through Security checkpoint #1 because I thought it would less used, thus quicker, and close to the concourse (C).
It took about 15 minutes to get through.
Security check point #2 would be closer to the concourse by only a few yards.

Got to the gate about 8:30 AM.

At about 9 AM, the flight was delayed 1 hour.

At about 9:30 AM, the flight was cancelled.

You are told to go to United customer Service, or call 1880UNITED1.

Here's a tip if you need to go to United Customer Service. Most people don't realize, or don't care, that there are two lines... one to talk to a live face-to-face customer service rep, and one for self-serve kiosk. The line for face-to-face was probably at least a 45 minute wait. The self-serve kiosks are very easy to operate. I walked right up, and had my flight rebooked in a matter of minutes. This included the machine getting stuck, so I had to pick up the phone right next to the kiosk and talk to a live rep! Sure beats waiting in line.

Anyway, my rebooking takes me through Denver, then to Vancouver. Will be there 8PM Vancouver time.

Lori, Jerry, Bill - I need to get your cell phone numbers. United calls if the flight is cancelled, but I think they have my # on files.

My 12 PM flight was delayed until 12:08, then 12:30, then 12:44. Then, it stopped on near the runway for 15 minutes waiting for a storm to pass. Other than that, the 2 hr flight to Denver was fine.

So far, my 6PM flight to Vancouver has been delayed to 6:30.

Feb. 14th

Yesterday we had the pre-site at Cardinal.
(a side note: I need to followup on Epson cleaning, and 43wide support)

We found out that no re-trapping is required on pickup jobs.

I need to get Antonio Malo our preferred server name.

Suggested weekly reboot of the Prinergy server.

We will put it where the Veris is now.

araxi is the prinergy user.

Steve Kidd will bring a document with him regarding tying into the Mac server.

Bruce will work during the day the week of the install.

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Feb. 12b

We will name our Prinergy boxes thus...
JP Primary – Taipan, 10.50.10.20
JP Renderstation EPM+ - Krait, 10.50.10.21
CP Primary - Asper
JG Primary - Tiger

Feb. 12

Yesterday Lori, Craig, and I had the Pre-site with Steve F.
We went through the presite document.
We need to get him server names and ip address pool.
He mentioned the following restaurants in Vancouver - Earls, Milestone, Cactus Club, Boathouse, (not) Monks, Granville Island, Keg (steak).
During install week, we'll install the hardware, platesetter, proofers, clients, use screen2go on the brisque, set up curves.
Steve is going to email me the workflow diagram.
we are not going to do job replication on the EPM+ (renderstation), only duplicate the database. This is because we'll have them both point to the tertiary server (boa).
We will keep the Preps templates on the Prinergy Server (not the prepress server).
Old Prep templates will get moved to sidewinder/prep files.
Input files will be kept on Prinergy.
Prinergy PDFs will be moved to boa.

tomorrow is presite at cardinal.
next week is first training session (paul - vancouver).

Feb. 8b

Confirmation on the Vancouver cafeteria...

They do not accept credit cards and the US money they do at par, so you should exchange to Canadian.

Prices for meals is very reasonable. A full lunch meal is $5.75 which is the highest price on the menu.

Feb. 8

We are mostly waiting for the pre-sites next week at this point.

A couple of notes...

The Vancouver Cafeteria does not accept credit cards, it does accept Debit machine transactions.
The best bet is to change some $$ to Canadian so you get the proper exchange rate.
You can use US money but the exchange won't be the same a bank.

For all training, it is optional to bring job file or a sample of what you may use.
Laptop is not needed for classroom training.

CP and JG have received their UPSs.

Feb. 5th

I discussed the JP Prepress plan with Steve L and Mike L.
This plan alternate's Lori D and Tom D schedule with Jaime C and Mike V during the two weeks of Startup Assistance.
Our goal is to get the Kodak tech to stay late also.  We'll discuss this with Kodak on Feb. 11th.

Mary and I discussed doing her WebEx train at JP, so that she is offsite and not tempted to do production.

We will re-evaluate later whether I need to be onsite at Cardinal for their Startup Assistance.

I need to send Tonya a request for the GUA conference.

Monday, February 4, 2008

Feb 4th

Have made travel arrangements for Bill W.
Have confirmed Feb 13 Presite at Cardinal.
Have ordered UPSs to CP and JG.

All flights are made.

Sunday, February 3, 2008

Feb 3rd

This begins the blog posts for Prinergy Implementation.
It is one week until the Presites.
It is two weeks before I go to training.
This week I have to:
- Get the UPSs for CP and JG.
- Make travel arrangements for Bill W.
- verify JP prep schedule with Steve/Mike L.
- verify Presite with Kelly.
- make arrangements for myself to CP/Dubuque
- followup with GUA request to Tonya

more to come...
